TEACHING PUPILS ABOUT CURRENT AFFAIRS
Picture News is a current weekly news pack for teachers with resources for children aged 3-16, focus questions, cross-curricular links & weekly news updates.
As part of our British Values and SMSC focus at Foxfields Academy, we have subscribed this year to participate in Picture News.
Each week Picture News selects a current news story, then turns it into a vibrant A2 poster providing a learning plan with strong links to British Values. Within the weekly resources, we have access to focus cards, a weekly newspaper and an engaging PowerPoint.
Every class at Foxfields will have a timetabled weekly British Values lesson focusing on the Picture News resource.
Our Picture News resources will be displayed in every classroom to help our pupils interact with key news events, the A2 poster and class work will be shared weekly on our British Values display board. By ensuring resources are shared and clearly visible, this can help raise awareness of multiple perspectives, develop critical thinking skills and encourage reflection and problem solving.
Picture News works closely with us keeping in touch with ideas and suggestions, they provide support in ensuring that we are resourced well in order to teach our pupils about current affairs and the world around them.
At Foxfields, we want to provide our pupils with opportunities to learn about our world, develop independence, resilience, respect and unlock their own drive and passion for learning. We believe in giving children a voice and encouraging them to use it to impact things they are inspired by or feel passionately about.
